THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END
Wow, I’m still shocked after reading that last page. I was repeatedly warned from reading this book, citing how devastating it was, but I went ahead with it, and damn, it truly breaks your heart till the very last word. The plot is clever. Picture an organisation (Death Cast) that pings people at midnight when they are going to die that day (called their end day), not how or where they will die, but just that they will die that day, they are called deckers as a result. This is the setting where we start our story with two different individuals who got the call, these 2 connect via a last friend app (made for deckers on their end day). Mateo and Rufus might seem like the usual opposite trope because of their contrasting personalities but they share some similarities apart from just their unfortunate fate. The book cleverly carries on the narrative, but does not ties it on only these 2 characters, multiple other characters too play their part in this world, and the final third is when everything just clicks, there’s chaos everywhere and then there’s the aforementioned ending that devastates you, I have read many “sad” books but this is one of the few ones that forced me to stay numb for a while, contemplating what I just read through.
An easy recommendation but you have been warned nonetheless, you’re not ready for this (trust me).
